I am often asked, “what is the best way to get recruiters to call me?” Often this is asked in an air of desperation or exasperation after my client has sent out dozens upon dozens of applications to a multitude of openings.
I open with that line so that we can learn from the article that I have linked to this blog. With the economy starting to pick up and I do think we are entering a phase of competitive talent hiring I’d like to share a few tidbits on how to really get yourself some exposure and get your head hunted!
First of all, you need to understand the framework of Social Media. You may be an expert on this or a complete novice. Regardless of your level, you need to put Social Media to work for you. Needless to say – creating a Linkedin profile would be your first step. I trust many of you have this box checked off already. I recommend spending 15-30 minutes each day cultivating your linked in network by adding friends and colleagues.
One of the next steps to do is create a Twitter account. Oh you have that already? Good – start tweeting about career related things that you are passionate or are an expert about. If you come across an article a journal or whatever, tweet about it. Now link these tweets to your Linkedin account. Thats a little trickier so use it as motivation to try to figure this out.
Next steps? Look at your resume and start writing a blog. Look at all the successes that you have had in your career and write about them. Write about the process and lessons learned that your experienced. Sooner or later you will get the Blug (Blog Bug) and be stricken to write almost every other day. Now link your Blog to your Linkedin, and Twitter profiles. Learn about SEO and how you can increase your Blog profile in the results.
These are just a few things to get you started. The point here is that you need to make them come to you. End the rat race already and start building your mouse trap.
