I am often asked by hiring managers in this economy where is all the talent is given that so many people are looking for work. Why can’t they fill their openings? Conversely, I am asked by candidates I work with, why they can’t seem to get their foot through the door. They’ve tried applying, networking, facebooking, linkedin-ing etc. ad nauseum!
What is a guy / gal to do?
The biggest reason I see to account for the discrepancy outlined above is that often the hardest positions to fill during a recession are exactly the very same ones that were difficult to fill during a boom economy. You’ll hear it often, but most experts say that there is a big gap in skills between what most peole there is a big gap in skills between what the position requires and what most people have on offer.
I couldn’t disagree more.
I think the biggest discrepancy are candidate’s ability to fully articulate their experiences at the different points of the recruiting process. I often see resume’s that have not been reviewed and polished, executives stumbling through interviews (whether its phone or in person). There is a distinct skill to understanding the recruiting process and being able to convey the right snippets of information at each stage.
