Resume Screening – How to get past this gauntlet

As I said previously – you can do all you want to enhance the font of your resume, plug in key words, play with your summary etc. but if still don’t understand who is reviews your resume at each stage, you are putting your candidacy at a distinct disadvantage.

If you’re like most people and are applying for a position to a company, you are either going directly to their website, or are applying through a job board. What you have to understand is that you are typically (if you’re lucky)  being then routed to an “Applicant Tracking System”. This is essentially a database that is specifically designed for recruiting.

If you think your resume is going straight to the hiring manager through this process, you’re being naive.
Now here’s the fun part, your resume is going straight to some junior person, who is overworked and has been looking at hundreds of resume’s by the time they get to yours. But here’s the secret, if you know how these employee’s have typically been trained to screen resume’s out, you can tailor the information you present to them at this stage.

At this stage of the process these folks have been trained to do the following:
1) Screen you out based on Industry Experience Relevance
– Do you come from the same or a similar industry?
2) Screen you out based on Functional and Level Experience
– Do you have the relevant functional experience for the job and are you at the right position level for the position?

Think about who is reviewing your resume, someone just out of school, who is way behind a deadline, completely overworked and is working on 18 other positions as to the one you are applying for. Given these screening gates – you have to position the information you are presenting in the simplest most concise format to fit the parameters I set above. I can help.
